As God is the Alpha and the Omega… as you may know, our beginning was orchestrated in the spirit realm. Remember that we are spirit in a body, just like Jesus was. Born into sin, the nurturing and wooing of God's Spirit, began to call to us, draw us to Him. John 12:32 quotes Jesus: "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." Even though Jesus was speaking about His ascension, which was over 2000 years ago, the draw of His Spirit in us perpetuates us to seek the fullness of Christ in us. This fullness first began to be satisfied when we accepted Him as our Lord and Savior. Over time, the process of God working in us as we minister to others and disciple them, brings about a great fullness of Christ in us. On the flip side, as we minister and disciple, a confidence and a trustworthiness begin to be imparted into us by God Himself. As we trust and obey His voice, He, in turn, trusts us with His people. Soon, the more He trusts us, the more people He puts in front of us. Then… to whom much is given, much is required.

Old Testament prophets had the singular role of bringing God’s word—instruction, warnings, prophecies, and so on—directly to His people. By contrast, in the New Testament all believers have a relationship with God and can hear Him speaking to them personally. Therefore, prophecy is confirmation of what is already heard through relationship. This also relates to leaders in the church today, who hear from God in their leadership capacity. Prophetic ministry is designed to bring confirmation, clarity, and empowerment to the vision of a church. In the Old Testament, prophets pronounced warnings and judgements upon people and nations who were in disobedience to God. The New Testament, however, is an era of God’s grace. [2] New Testament prophecy is for ‘strengthening, encouragement, and comfort.’ (1 Cor 14:3) New Testament prophecy is consistent with the ministry of Jesus and His revelation of the Father’s nature. Even if a prophetic word is addressing error, the prophetic motive is redemption—to bring God’s purpose and to transform the situation and its outcome—and the word will be framed that way, presented in love and humility.

A prophet is one who receives supernatural revelation and speaks by divine inspiration. Naturally, he is used frequently in the spiritual gift of prophecy as well as the revelation gifts: the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, and discerning of spirits. Any believer may be used of God in the gift of prophecy as the Spirit wills, but that does not make him a prophet. A prophet is, first of all, a minister who can preach or teach with an anointing. Because the prophet seems to be the second highest calling (see the order as it is listed in 1 Cor. 12:28), even a fulltime minister would not be placed in the office of a prophet until he has been in ministry for some years.
